Description: Casting "The Good Negro". James Lawrence: male, 30s, African-American, reverend and civil right activist fighting to end segregation in Birmingham, AL, 1962, good-looking and smooth-talking (though not necessarily slick), has been in Birmingham for six months looking for a good case to build a movement on, has a natural charisma that induces admiration from everyone around him, even if they don’t believe in what he’s fighting for, is many things but is not an angel, the appeal and power come from his ability to reach people on their own level, undeniably forceful with his words and has a fierce passion for this movement, looking for the man beneath the role; Henry Evans: male, 30s, African-American, James’ earthy, spirited best friend and right-hand man, they’ve been on this mission together for a long time, and Henry brings life and humor to what could otherwise be a never-ending, painstaking mission, enjoys the attention that comes with being James’ right hand man, what James has in power, Henry has in buoyancy, a man of big appetites; Pelzie Sullivan: male, 27, African-American, Claudette’s husband, was born and raised southwest of Birmingham, it’s all he’s ever known, works as a painter’s helper, lower class and uneducated, but very street-smart, has known violence, having witnessed the suffering of his community his whole life, senses the real danger that could come if his family participates in letting Lawrence use them to build the movement on, a simple man of few words but great strength. Casting director’s statement: “Read the breakdown carefully and submit only if you are ‘right’ for one or more roles.” Auditions will be held by appt. only.
