What It's Like To Be A Movie Extra! As you know it takes a lot of time and effort to make a movie. There are hundreds and sometimes thousands of people needed to make a feature film. Take a moment and consider the great epic films of the last 20 years. These movies include Gandhi, Spartacus, Gladiator, as well as many others. The grand scale of production for these movies was monumental and it took the creativity and dedication of many talented people (production hands, movie extras, technical experts, and etc.) to make these movies happen.
To put together a great movie you have to have the main and supporting components which include the stars, co-stars, locations, and other core elements. Along with the core elements you need to have those elements that sit in the background practically unnoticed but without their influence the movie would turn out less than satisfactory. These background elements go by the name of props and movie extras.
So what is movie extra anyway?
The movie extra is the often unnoticed but vital element in the film. They are the people in the background who fill in the empty spaces and make the scenes more lifelike. They have nonspeaking roles but their silence speaks volumes because no movie would be complete without movie extras. Imagine Gladiator without onlookers at the arena or imagine Fenway Park in Field of Dreams without the fans. Without the movie extras the film would be lifeless.
So what is it like to be a movie extra?
Hurry up
. and wait
we need the extras now! There you have it and it's on to the next gig. Although you can't accuse extras of having a glamorous experience it can be a fun experience if you know how to play it right. The cool thing about being an extra for a major production is that you're treated as if you are a movie star. You're catered to and you get the make-up, hair and all those good things depending on your role. Also, being an extra can be the beginning of a career in acting for you. You get a chance to see what happens behind the scenes in the movies and you get paid to hang out with the ultra cool "Acting" class.
Being a movie extra can be a rewarding experience. Also, it can be the beginning of a fruitful career in acting. When your number is called and it's time to go on your background acting gig make sure to do your best and be a superstar. Extract all of the life juice out of the experience and be prepared for whatever comes your way. You never know what could happen on the set and your break could come at any time.
